A Downcountry Enduro Shootout

To clarify, no-one’s pitting downcountry bikes against against enduro bike. That would be silly! Instead the publication Enduro is pitting 3 downcountry bikes against each other. Confusing, no? Still, we press on.

Enduro Mag did a direct comparison between the Canyon Lux Trail, Cannondale Scalpel and Specialized S-Works 8. Arguing about what bikes the term “downcountry” applies to is dumb, but if you asked us, we’re not sure we’d apply the label to a Cannondale with a Lefty or the S-works without “Evo” in its name.

Still, like we said, arguing about what is and isn’t downcountry is dumb (unless you want to do it in the comments).

Enduro’s take was:

The Scalpel: Most racy. Minimal features, stretched-out riding position, and a Lefty. Lightning fast everywhere but maybe a bit too racy if you’re not chasing uphill KOMs.

The Lux Trail: Feels more like a shrunken trail bike than an XC racer. Lots of smart details, storage in the down tube, integrated tools and a comfortable, balanced position that inspires confidence. The short travel can get overwhelmed on the descents.

Specialized Epic 8: All the tech with RockShox Flight Attendant electronic suspension. Super clean cockpit, plush when you need it, firm when you don’t. A great all-rounder if you can handle the price tag. Which is, to be clear, astronomical.
